On a high rooftop overlooking the city, Tengu doubles over laughing, clutching his side. “Ah, fuck me... that might be the most I’ve laughed in years...!” Karu stands beside him, composed but wary. “I realize he’s hiding his ears somehow,” Karu says quietly, “but you know he can still hear you, yes...?”
Tengu waves a hand dismissively. “Please. I’ll not hide from the likes of him. No magic, no skill with a sword... what will he do—throw books at us?”
Karu leans forward, frowning. “Or find allies. Look...” His gaze fixes on something distant. Below, the faint glow of torchlight flickers against the edge of a large canvas tent. Tengu’s grin falters. “...Is it me, or does that tent seem—” He stops mid-sentence, swearing under his breath. “...Bordel de merde...!”
Karu straightens sharply. “You know damn well what that is.” Tengu’s humor is gone now. He exhales, resigned. “...Go. Head off the fool.”
Karu turns toward the stairwell. “I’ll see to the children.” He pauses, glancing back. “Fair enough. I’ll meet you when it’s done.”
